SMWARNER/ Trinidad & Tobago
Sheldon M. Warner is the artist and textile surface designer, behind the brand S.M. WARNER: artwithattitude. Warner’s philosophy revolves around creating an offering that is unique and reflective of craftsmanship. The emphasis therefore is on the conceptualization and creation of original pieces in the form of wearable art - acrylic on canvas, fabric, pottery and glassware. The brand is a true representation of an artistic lifestyle experience.
Warner is inspired by the vibe of the Caribbean people. “The way we walk, the way we dance, the way we move, even our motion when we talk. That flow...that feel...that colour!”
When it comes to the hand painted clothing, there is a conscious choice of use of natural fabrics ~ cottons, linens, voiles and lycra which lends itself to an earthy, yet vibrant nuance that is essentially Caribbean. The variations of blues, greens, creams and browns of the islands intensify into yellows, reds and fluorescent shades that are inevitable the result of the Carnival and cultural movement infecting the very rhythm of our people. Gold, bronze, silver and black highlight the background of the tapestry and lend a touch of elegance and majesty to the designs which emphasizes the human figure as a recurring motif in an ethnic and abstract form.
A former student of Queen’s Royal College, Warner was taught Art by well-known artist Jackie Hinkson. He is a member of the Art Society of Trinidad and Tobago and has taken part in the Group’s Annual Exhibitions. He has also hosted solo exhibitions - “Finally” (2009), “A Gift of Colour” (2010), “Me…You…We. All One.” (2015) and “All One” (2016).
On the fashion scene SMWARNER has shown collections at various fashion weeks – Barbados Fashion Week (2011), San Fernando Fashion Week (2012 & 2013), Red Runway (2013 & 2014) and Styleweek POS (2014).
